BYD Breaks Sales Records, has a Tech Hub Tour, and Goes Factory-Backed

BYD is officially on a roll — and we don’t mean silently coasting on regen braking. The Chinese EV powerhouse has just shattered local sales records, delivering 8,156 vehicles in June 2025 alone — a massive 368% jump from the same time last year. That figure also smashes BYD’s previous monthly record by nearly 70%, landing them an impressive 6.7% share of Australia’s new car market, and vaulting them into the national top five brands faster than you can say “Blade Battery”.

With only half the year gone, BYD has already outsold its entire 2024 total of 20,458 cars. Driving much of this success is the BYD SHARK 6 plug-in hybrid ute, which has now clocked over 10,000 units sold since its local launch in October. Seems Aussies are loving their EVs with a bit of bite.

June also marked a changing of the guard, with EVDirect wrapping up its role as BYD’s distributor. Under Luke Todd’s savvy leadership, EVDirect helped BYD establish a solid foothold in record time. Now, the reins have been handed over to BYD’s factory-backed Australian operation, promising even greater momentum.

“Each month, you can see more BYDs on Aussie roads,” said BYD Australia COO Stephen Collins. “We’re grateful to our partners and excited for what’s next.”

What is next? BYD’s Tech Hub Tour, kicking off in Sydney on July 9, giving punters a look under the bonnet (figuratively) at the cutting-edge tech behind their meteoric rise.

From ATTOs to SHARKs, BYD is rewriting the EV rulebook — and Australians are lapping it up.
