Chery Tiggo X7 Revealed, a Square-Jawed Tiggo 7 Built for Dirt

Chery Tiggo X7 is a rugged-style SUV built on the Tiggo 7, revealed at a preview event in China. It has more than 200mm of ground clearance and up to 700mm of wading depth.

Chery describes its new SUV as “designed to extend family adventures beyond the city”, with the somewhat naff tagline “Explore Together, Enjoy Anywhere”. The Tiggo X7 is the Tiggo 7 made for dirt roads.

The show car was painted a very pretty sage green, with black wheel-arch flares and all-terrain tyres. Its square, boxy front end has a chunky black grille surround and looks and feels vaguely Defender-ish. Roof rails and side steps finish a look that’s a long way from the softer, city-limited Tiggo 7.

Ground clearance and wading depth give a bit of verisimilitude to the outdoorsy styling.

Off-road crawl control holds a slow, steady speed on steep or rough tracks, so the driver only has to steer. The 540-degree camera shows the ground under the car as well as around it, which helps when you’re placing the wheels on rocks. The second-row seats fold with one touch to fit camping gear. Yes, we have seen all this before but where legacy brands will continue to hurt is price.

Chery will sell it alongside the new Tiggo 7, which stays a comfortable everyday SUV.

A New Chinese Model Every Day

New models come out of China almost daily, churned out with dizzying efficiency. Chery alone sells the Tiggo 4 Hybrid, Tiggo 7 and Tiggo 9 SUVs, and the Stockman diesel plug-in hybrid ute is next. It’s being tested by Premcar before it goes on sale.

Chery also owns Omoda, Jaecoo, Lepas and iCAUR. The Omoda 4 and Omoda 7 and the iCAUR V25 are due in 2027. A former Kia boss warned that Chinese brands will take 60% of the market by 2030, and this is why. The tsunami shows no sign of letting up.

Chery hasn’t said whether the Tiggo X7 will go on sale in Australia, so prices and further specification details to follow should we be deemed worthy.
