After the earlier EV9 unveiling, KIA appears to be on a roll. Kia EV5 is due in Australia next year, while the EV3 and EV4 reveals are concept cars. If the Concepts of EV9 and EV5 are anything to go by, the finished products will be remarkably familiar by the time they arrive.

EV3 and EV4

We can expect marvels not previously seen on an automobile before. EV3’s cabin has a design with a light and airy feel, and its natural materials weave magic forms superior to carbon fibre. The seats use a 3-D printed technology, and its console table was grown, not manufactured. Kia’s goal of sustainability saw the team develop Mycelium products, meaning part of the EV3 comes from mushroom roots.

But, it doesn’t stop there, EV4’s console table comes from hemp. It may not come in a wrapper, but it will still make for a great Saturday night.

Hemp and bamboo have always been a sustainable alternative to using resource-hungry options, but the design of electric vehicles has turbo-charged (pardon the pun) the push to use properly sustainable manufacture.

Kia made grand gestures at the launch of EV9. There are 10 must-have sustainable items for all future Kias. Bioplastic is made from biomass sources such as vegetable oils, corn extract, sawdust and sugarcane, and is used in dashboards, consoles, pillars, and trim.

Kia stated that Bio Polyurethane (PU) could be the optimal leather replacement it is fashioned from plant-based components to provide excellent support, cushioning, and durability. The carpets can be made from 100 per cent recycled PET, with an option part of this material being sourced from recycled fishing nets.

EV3 will be created as a smaller version of the EV9, while EV4 continues Kias promise of a passenger sedan being part of their fleet.

EV5

Kia’s strategy has been to fire the first shots in slow-adopting EV markets, using EV6 and EV9. EV3, EV4 and EV5 will come after, with pricing between $35,000 and $50,000, giving an electric vehicle price range of $30,000 to $80,000

Kia EV5, is the brand’s 3rd BEV on the E-GMP platform. Designed using ‘Opposites United’, EV5 is intended to be harmonious with a cabin that feels more like a lounge.

The power and the Drive

EV5 will be made in China and Korea, with the Chinese getting the standard, long-range, and long-range AWD versions.

Standard: 64kWh battery, 160kW motor, 530km range

Long-range: 88kWh battery, 160kW motor, 720km range

Long-range AWD: 88kWh battery, 230kW Motors comb (F 160kW, R 70k), 650km range

All have fast-charging from 30% to 80% capacity in 27 minutes.

EV5’s battery has been created to function in extreme hot and cold weather. EV6’s heat pump system, is used in EV5 to manage the battery’s temperature.

As expected, there will be regenerative braking system and an i-Pedal.

“The EV market is expanding from one catering to the smaller early-adopter group to a more broader mass majority of customers. As a leader in the great EV transition, we have quickly expanded our EV line-up beyond the EV6 and EV9 to include a variety of small- and medium-sized models such as the EV5. Our competitive, growing EV line-up will accelerate the popularization of electric vehicles and provide consumers with more options from which to choose,” Spencer Cho, Head of Global Business Planning Sub-Division, said.

The EV5 will in GT form, with GT performance.

Infotainment

As seen in other Kia’s recently, the connected car Navigation Cockpit (ccNC) has over-the-air software updates, a Panoramic Wide Display using dual 12.3-inch displays, and a 5-inch climate control display. There’ll be an optional windshield HUD (Head Up Display) for those who like the extra data displayed where it is easily seen.

EV5 has minimal physical buttons. Under the AVNT screen, 4 buttons control start/stop, AVNT and climate control. On previous models, the same operation would have required 17 buttons

There is three-zone climate control with a feature to reduce air conditioner odours.

Safety

The EV5 has:

seven airbags

state-of-the-art seatbelt technology

structure is engineered for optimum strength.

latest Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS)

Highway Driving Assist 2 (HDA2), which helps drivers maintain distance, stay centered in the lane, change lanes, and adjust lateral positioning.

Using the power

EV5 will have Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) and Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) functions where possible

More detail will come to hand as the launch comes closer.
