Tesla and Mercedes-Benz have done a deal allowing electric Mercedes models to use Tesla Superchargers in North America. That won’t help us much here in Australia, but is it a sign of things to come?
One thing that annoys EV owners (other than Tesla) is a conga-line of Teslas lined up at fast chargers not owned by the Tesla network. Galling to many, the reverse is not the case. Now that Tesla no longer has the market to itself, it seems selfish in the extreme that the vast network of tesla superchargers is not available to any brand but tesla. One would think the more people who use it, the more money Tesla makes. However, the Tesla boss doesn’t always make decisions in the bests interests of users.
Things have changed since Tesla first started, where very little choice was available. Tesla had to set up its own network in order to become viable, and back then, the outrageously expensive brand had free charging at branded superchargers. Even then, Teslas would clog up other chargers.
Part of the reason was that Tesla charges owners via their Tesla account. In other words, only Teslas could use Tesla chargers.
Although the deal struck between Mercedes Benz and Tesla does not open the network to other brands, it signals a possible future where all chargers are available to all EV owners.
