Michael Simcoe Passes GM DESIGN Torch to Bryan Nesbitt


General Motors (GM) has announced a pivotal leadership change in its Design division, marking the end of an era under Michael Simcoe and the beginning of a new chapter with Bryan Nesbitt at the helm. Simcoe, widely regarded as a transformative force in automotive design, is credited with reshaping GM’s vehicle portfolio and redefining the industry’s approach to creativity, technology, and execution.

Simcoe began his design career at GM Holden in 1983. Following promotions, Mike moved between the USA and Australia, eventually landing GM’s top design position.

Under Simcoe’s stewardship, GM Design delivered groundbreaking vehicles such as the Cadillac LYRIQ, GMC HUMMER EV, and Chevrolet Equinox EV—each a testament to his focus on customer-centric design and technological innovation. His leadership also saw the establishment of GM’s flagship Design West studio in Warren, Michigan, a state-of-the-art facility designed to foster collaboration and innovation.

Reflecting on his tenure, Simcoe said, “It has been humbling to shape the future of transportation while ensuring the intersection of art and technology remains core to GM Design. Our team’s creative talent has been nothing short of inspiring.”

The torch now passes to Bryan Nesbitt, who has played a critical role in GM’s design evolution, most recently steering Cadillac’s avant-garde concept vehicles, Opulent Velocity and SOLLEI. Known for his bold, visionary approach, Nesbitt aims to build on Simcoe’s legacy while charting a forward-thinking course.

“I am honoured to lead GM Design,” Nesbitt said. “Design will continue to be at the forefront of adopting new technologies, improving speed to market, and meeting customer needs. Great design is and will always be the cornerstone of every vehicle we create.”

GM President Mark Reuss lauded both leaders, calling Simcoe a “visionary” who elevated GM Design to global prominence and Nesbitt a “formidable talent” poised to lead the company into an electrified and autonomous future.

As GM accelerates its transition to electrification and sustainable mobility, the design division remains central to its strategy. With Nesbitt at the helm, the industry can expect bold, innovative designs that reflect the evolving needs of modern drivers, blending form, function, and cutting-edge technology.

This leadership transition signals continuity and progress, as GM Design continues to shape the future of transportation—pushing boundaries, challenging conventions, and setting new benchmarks for the automotive industry.
