Mitsubishi’s New Triton – Is it Enough?

Mitsubishi has introduced the all-new Mitsubishi Triton to the local market.

“New-gen Triton is such a significant vehicle for Mitsubishi, globally and of course in Australia,” said MMAL CEO, Shaun Westcott.

“The new model is a significant step forward in many ways, with its upgraded drivetrain, enhanced load carrying capacity, increased interior comfort and modern day connectivity options.

“But it also retains the trademark Triton toughness, with a global vehicle development program that included Australia.

“New Triton retains incredible off-road capability, but is equally at home on the work site, the desert, the beach, the snow or in the city. We cannot wait to bring the Triton to Australian showrooms,” he said.

Australian-market production starts in Thailand in December, 2023 and will be in showrooms in February, 2024.

It comes hot on the heels of the new VW Amarok, a rebadged Ford Ranger, which at least on paper, appears to be a great proposition by comparison. Only a drive will tell, and price will be critical.

Bi-Turbo drivetrain

All-new Triton carries a familiar 2.4-litre Bi-Turbo diesel engine with some shiny new bits. ‘Twin stage’ turbocharging uses two turbochargers, a small unit for quick response at low revs, and bigger turbo that carries the grunt for extra load capacity. The 150kW/470Nm power numbers are across the range, with both 4 x 2 and 4 x 4 drivetrains with a modified six-automatic transmission. A six-speed manual will come to some local models after the initial launch..

Fuel consumption and other figures will be revealed shortly.

Model range:

At launch, Double Cab and Club Cab Pickup models will be on sale, with Cab-Chassis coming later on.

All-new Triton has the familair GLX, GLX+, GLS and GSR nomonclatures.

GLX and GLX+ come with Easy Select 4WD, adding standard rear differential lock to GLX+ models.

GLS and GSR have Super Select 4WD II as standard, allowing the driver to use 4WD high-range on paved surfaces without locking the centre differential.

Drive mode options include Eco, Mud, and Snow.
