Despite stormy economic seas, overall vehicles sales for the first half of the year are 632,412 , up from 581,759 this time last year, with 119,659 of those sales in June. Electric vehicle (EV) sales have been variously reported as “tanking”, “decreasing”, and rather amusingly, “ending in tears.”

Our official figures kick those reckless claims in the crotch. 8.0% of all vehicles sold in June were electric, down from 8.8% in June 2023. This was dishonestly reported as a disaster by publications keen on clicks. They failed to mention that EV sales for the first 6 months jumped from 43,092 last year to 50,219 this year. Ev sales are predicted to top 100,000 vehicles.

Hybrids have thrown more fuel into the inferno of public debate by accounting for 14.4% of all June sales, up from 7.8 last June, or 81,613 Year to date up from 38,270 this time in 2023.

ABOVE: 2024 Electric Vehicles

Extrapolating the number further, hybrids are up 113.3%, PHEVs are up 129.6% and pure EVs have increased by 16.5%. Although diesel vehicles are up 10.2%, petrol vehicles are down 7.3% in a market that is substantially greater than 2023.

The blowhards have it wrong. EV and HEV sales are up and petrol sales are down. While individual monthly sales could be considered blips on the delivery schedule, no body can deny the significant increase for 6 months puts egg in their collective faces.

Toyota is still market leader with 121,301 (19.2%) for the first 6 months of 2024, followed by Ford (9,493), Mazda (9,483), Kia (8,225) and Mitsubishi (7,723).

SUVs make up 54.5% of the market and vehicles such as Ranger and HiLux account for a further 23.3%. Although almost ¼ of the market is made up of utes and vans, well over half of sales are SUVs., passenger cars make up only 17.6% where once sedans, coupes, wagons and convertibles made up over 90% of sales.

Although Ford Ranger is number 1, Tesla Model Y is number 5. How satisfying that must be for the anti-EV lobby.

If all those figures seem boring and difficult to digest, tell the climate change deniers that rich greenies are buying up EV and Hybrid vehicles in ever increasing numbers. That should really get up their noses, and you can feel suitably smug.
