Volvo’s fully electric SUVs have been graced with new powertrains and larger batteries for more range and faster charging.

This will be the first time in 25 years that there has been a rear- wheel-drive Volvo, something some of us find very exciting

Also a first, the second-generation permanent magnet electric motor at the rear axles has been an in-house Volvo achievement.

Rear-wheel Details

Rather excitingly, the 175kW rear-wheel drive is 3% more powerful than the outgoing 170kW front-wheel drive model.

XC40 single motor carries over the 69kWh battery capacity cooling improvements increase the range to 460km WLTP from 425km(WLTP). C40’s range is up from 438km to 476 kilometres (WLTP). Charging is always the main questions, and an 10-80% charge comes in around 34 minutes on a 130kW DC charger. It isn’t such a long time if you nip out for a coffee meanwhile.

All-wheel drive Models

The all-wheel drives previously had two 150kW e- motors on the front and rear axles. They’ve been replaced by Volvo’s in-house 183kW permanent magnet e-motor at the back and a new 117kW asynchronous electric motor at the front, but the 300kW/660Nm combined output remains as before.

Acceleration

0-100kph results are 7.4 seconds for the single moto, and 4.9 seconds on the dual-motor version.

The AWD Battery and Range

An 82kWh battery pack, along with better cooling, means XC40 AWD goes for up to 500km which is 62-kilometre better than the old model.

C40 AWD range is now 507km, instead of 4 a mere 451km (WLTP) previously.

Charging is now a maximum of 200kW DC, up from 150kW DC, and an10-80% is 9 minutes faster, at 28 minutes.

There are new 19-inch alloy wheels on both XC40 and C40 to help reduce drag.

“These updates are another big step in our stated local strategy of becoming fully electric by 2026,” said Volvo Car Australia Managing Director, Stephen Connor.

“Two of the most frequently asked questions customers ask about our fully electric XC40 Recharge and C40 Recharge are: “How far will it go on a single charge?” and “How long does it take to charge?”

“These upgrades address those questions and will make our fully electric models even more attractive than they already were.

“Globally, Volvo is firmly committed to becoming an electric-only carmaker by 2030, but in Australia we’ve previously announced we will make the transition to full EV happen by 2026.

“The powertrain and battery upgrades in XC40 and C40 Recharge models will help us achieve this goal and accomplish our aspiration of selling 20,000 fully electric cars every year in Australia. ”

Volvo is now taking orders for these MY24 upgrades, with deliveries for quarter 3, 2023.
