Volvo has always been seen as a safe, if conservative brand. It made an excellent car, pioneered 3-point seat belts, and made daylight use of “running lights” a thing. Even at lunch time, a 240DL could be seen hurtling down a motorway with “parking lights” on.
In recent years, the Swede’s lights had started to fade despite continuing a 1st-class range of premium carriages. Had it not been for the 1999 sale to Ford, the company may have gone the way of the dodo bird. In Ford “restructuring” saw Jaguar Land Rover, and Aston Martin sold off, then Volvo followed suit shortly after.
Geely quietly let Volvo get on with it, and hasn’t it done well?

ABOVE: Volvo, then and now
Australian sales have done double digit increases, fuelled partly by an upsurge in the interest in EVs now that a progressive government is in charge. Volvo sold 1037 units (up 46% on last August) in August, and over 8,000 this year. 3,000 of that figure are EVs. Sweden has had a huge uptake as have the other Nordic countries, and it says a lot about their mindset. Perhaps we can now follow suit.
Volvo Car Australia Managing Director, Stephen Connor, said it was pleasing to see the increasing popularity of Volvo’s pure electric range being reflected in strong month-to-month sales. “We’ve delivered close to 3000 fully electric SUVs in the first eight months of 2023, which is an outstanding result in a very competitive market. Our XC40 Recharge Pure Electric is leading the way, recording its best month ever in August, with 382 sales.
“We have received over 800 pre-orders for the new EX30, our smallest ever electric SUV, which boasts the smallest carbon footprint of any Volvo produced to date. With the EX30 we have experienced record enquiry and order intake measured against all of our recently introduced electric vehicle models.
Customer deliveries of our EX30 are planned to commence in Quarter One of next year so I encourage our new customers placing orders from today to stay in close contact with their chosen retailer.”
EX30 will follow on the CX40 and C40 EVs for what should be another bumper year. It also answers the critics who still claim that this EV thing wil never take off.
