Hyundai, like most other car makers, is fond of adding “electrified” to the product descriptions. It allows them to add a touch of spark to the electric-only forecourt. Did you see what I did there?
The Hyundai group EVs are falling from the skies like confetti, giving Tesla a run for its money. Oh stop that, you KNOW it is.
To that end, Hyundai is giving the IONIQ 5 N another airing, after its Motorsport Park special guest appearance. It will join the all-new KONA Electric at Melbourne EV Show. All-new KONA Electric will be making its Australian debut, so we can expect punters to be pressing their grubby little faces against the glass with all the energy they can muster.
For those who missed it, and that includes me Guido, IONIQ 5 N (register your interest HERE) did the rounds at Sydney’s World Time Attack Challenge with Drift King Kenichi Tsuchiya driving, if that’s what you call an exhibition like that. IONIQ 5 N dabs the brows of petrolheads as it blows the modded 90’s hatches out of the water. Not only that, it gives your average supercar a run for its money.

As if to add a touch of verisimilitude, Hyundai’s stall will have their newly minted 2023 World Car of the Year IONIQ 6, and 2022 World Car of the Year IONIQ 5.
“The Melbourne EV Show will provide a terrific showcase for our exciting new range of electric vehicles,” said Hyundai Motor Company Australia Chief Executive Officer, Ted Lee.
“With all-new KONA Electric and the high-performance IONIQ 5 N, alongside our World Car of the Year-winning IONIQ 5 and IONIQ 6, the Hyundai stand will highlight our continuing commitment to bringing advanced electrified vehicles to Australia,” he said.
The Melbourne Convention & Exhibition Centre will host the Melbourne EV Show with new and soon-to-be-released electric plug-in hybrid cars. There will also be a host of charging options and accessories.
The three-day event from September 22-24 will also feature EV Live presentations, a Formula E race car, Formula E simulation challenge, as well as an e-bike and scooter test track.
KONA Electric
The KONA Electric is the last variant of the KONA range, with 99kW or 150kW of get-up-and-go, and range of around 500km from its petite 64.8kWh battery.
KONA Electric has:
- active air flaps
- Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) outlet
- Head-Up Display (HUD)
- i-PEDAL driving mode
- Smart Regenerative Braking System
- battery pre-conditioning (if navigating to a high speed charger)
- heat pump
- battery heater
- over-the-Air (OTA) updates
IONIQ 5 N
IONIQ 5 N is the first electric N car, and will blitz the other N’s to within an inch of their lives. It brings the three pillars of N performance using motorsport-bred technologies and years of electrified ‘Rolling Lab’ development:
- Corner Rascal: Body and chassis reinforcements provide high torsional rigidity and direct steering feel, enabling rally-inspired dual-motor AWD cornering, with N Drift Optimiser among an array of tech that enhances performance & driving fun
- Racetrack Capability: Up to 478kW with N Grin Boost engaged, and increased endurance with industry-leading thermal management and regenerative braking
- Everyday Sportscar: N e-shift and N Active Sound + deliver an electrifying sports car experience with tactile feel and immersive sound
There will be a one-day pre-sale event on September 15, giving attendees the chance to be the first in Australia to grab a hold IONIQ 5 N.
Buyers will order IONIQ 5 N online through Hyundai’s website with customer deliveries in early 2024. Each IONIQ 5 N is customised by the buyers, who will personally select their options and exterior colours. Chances are, you won’t be driving down the freeway to find an identical IONIQ 5 N passing you.
