Why Some DashCam Files Are Unreadable – Navman Pro 4K Test

While test driving the new Navman MiVue Pro 4K this week, we came across some interesting questions, and even more interesting answers.

One of the biggest reasons for faults being reported to dashcam manufacturers is unreadable video files. At the moment of an accident, a dashcam is meant to record the event, and in almost all cases it does.

When planning the newest of the Navman, the Navman MiVue Pro 4K, cameras, customer feed back was pretty clear. The users wanted more time on event recordings, and fewer faulty files. It is vital that users insert only the recommended SD cards that have been properly certified for fast read/write at extremes of temperature.

Lots of dashcam makers have the same issues, and price does not necessarily mean quality, but generally, high end dashcams are better spec’d.

Previously, events were recorded for 10 seconds either side of the incident. The new Navman Pro 4K puts a minute either side of the event into a folder that can’t be overwritten automatically. The previous files were merely an extract of the master copy, whereas the new format moves the full 2-minute section into the “events” folder.

The other problem was that dashcams typically only write the entire file to the SD card at the end of each segment. The SD receives a file once a minute, or whatever timing has been set (if variable timing is available). If the SD card is removed prior to the full write, the video is corrupt, so with video being written every few seconds, the most you would miss is a second or two.

The full Navman MiVue Pro 4K review will include pricing and features, but for now, here are some morsels to chew over:

  • How Fast is the read/write
  • How often the files are written to the card
  • How much video can the SD store
  • What resolution is best
  • Is the footage of sufficiently good quality to provide accurate information after an accident
