We’ve long said Tesla’s Model 3 and Model Y, and the silly centre instrument panel, needed rethinking.
I simply couldn’t understand why a company that is currently selling the 3rd most popular car in the country went down such a circuitous route when designing their interior. All buttons and most of the controls were removed, including the driver instrument cluster.
There are a lot of aftermarket add-ons, and one reader has done just that.
“Since buying my Tesla Model 3 LR in June 2021 I have been interested in finding something resembling a conventional dashboard that could be fitted to the car. My main aims were to find an easily fitted device that was in keeping with the aesthetic of the dashboard and its large central screen. A friend with an identical car had the same aim.”

The reader wanted what most of us want, and the Model 3 always should have had.
“He located the XTRONS online and, being technically minded and someone used to modifying cars, installed the device easily. I was really impressed by how it looked so Tesla like and by the outward quality of the device. With his encouragement I found one online and this morning he fitted it into my Tesla for me. The fitting took less than forty minutes with the most difficult part under the dash taking less than four minutes. The car came apart like Lego. He says the cars are easier than most to work on. Patience and some dexterity seem to be the most important gifts for installers. Driving home I was impressed by the high quality of the display and the improved safety of having important information in line of sight. It has made an already near perfect car even better.”
Despite Tesla’s stubborn refusal to include Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, this unit also does that wirelessly. The CarPlay comes up in the dash, so as our reader gets time to come to terms with it, was see how he goes, and will keep you posted.
We think this looks good and the install process was said to be smooth.
