Sydney Olympic Park is now the venue for this unique  event. Having been moved and renamed Everything Electrical Sydney brings together car-makers, energy providers, tiny-house builders, micro personal transport retailers, electric motor cycle brands, and more.

Everything Electrical is the brainchild of Red Dwarf star, Robert Llewellyn, a renewables crusader who presented 10 series of Scrapheap Challenge. Latterly, Fully Charged is Llewellyn’s creative outlet where electric car reviews combine with podcasts, and all things renewables.

in the 21st centruy, sustainability fights against propaganda just to be heard. Although, science showed us that global warming beyond 1.5c would cause catastrophic climate events that could render part of the world uninhabitable, we continue unabated. We are already seeing parts of North Queensland uninsurable as actuaries decide the risk to investors is too great.

The time to act may not have passed us by, but rhetoric surrounding EVs, decarbonisation, renewables and the removal of fossil fuels has to be based on government policy not short term profit. Lobbyists continue to act on the government against the best interests of the majority of the world’s citizens.

However, there are good coroporate entities. Exhibitors include car companies like Polestar, Hyundai, Audi, GWM and BMW, motor-cycle makers Zero, and Fonz, and energy companies like Origin and Amber. Amber resells renewable power at wholesale prices, something unheard of only a few short years ago.

Founder, Robert Llewellyn said, “after changing the event name and location, I was afraid no one would come. But, as I saw the line up prior to opening this morning, I realised I need not have been concerned. This spot is a bit better in fact. There is more space for test drives.”

Not only are car and bike makers giving event-goers testdrives, but EV home charging companies give potential owners a range of options for wall boxes in garages and driveways.

Diverse stands include student groups from Sydney’s universities, who have projects on display including those from the solar challenge as well as scratch-built race cars.

Tesla Owners club spreads the world about what is arguably the world’s best-known EV, and several exhibitors have classic cars which have been converted to electric power. While the latter presents difficulties with charging and range, ingenuity overcomes those in order to keep classic cars on the road without  fossil fuels.

It is pleasing to witness such a large gathering of like-minded organisations, and even more gratifying to know that it is more than corporate green-washing. It is a shift in business models, and in consumer habits.

Llewelyn said, “we have to stop burning stuff.” Like many enlightened consumers, Llewelyn is aware that change comes from consumer choice, “everyone can make a difference.”

Eevrything Electrical Sydney runs from the 9th to the 11th of February, 2023 at the showgrounds at Sydney Olympic Park. Sydney’s electric trains are running, so go by public transport and save the CO2. Exit the station and take the first right to the venue entrance.
