EV9 will be Kia’s first three-row seat electric SUV, and continues the big Korean’s push to number one. It is part of Hyundai Group, and together with Hyundai and Genesis, is already Australia’s number 2. This should sound a warning to number 1, Toyota, but probably won’t.
EV9 shares Electric Global Modular Platform (E-GMP) with other group models such as EV6, IONIQ 5, IONIQ 6 and GV60. The platform can be stretched or shrunk to fit almost any sized vehicle requirement. Like those models, range is around 541 km (WLTP), with the ability to make the best use of the rare 350kw charging.
Features include Highway Driving Pilot (HDP) system, available in the Kia EV9 GT-Line in the future, with Level 3 autonomous driving where local laws allow. Kia Connect Store allows features on demand via Over the Air (OTA) updates. This is something we criticised BMW for, with seat and steering wheel heating, and wireless Apple CarPlay being among the subscription features.

Ho Sung Song, President and CEO, said: “The Kia EV9 transcends all aspects of traditional SUV thinking and represents the pinnacle of Kia’s design and engineering capabilities. Created to meet the needs of all family members, the EV9 also spearheads Kia’s rapid transition to a sustainable mobility solutions provider, not just by its advanced EV architecture, but also through the numerous recycled and sustainable materials used in its creation.”
The Korean market Kia will take EV9 pre-orders starting in the second quarter of 2023, with global markets following soon after.

Drivetrain
A 76.1-kWh battery powers the Rear Wheel Drive (RWD) Standard model, with an optional 99.8- Wh on offer. The latter powers all All Wheel Drive (AWD) models.
The RWD Long Range has a 150 kW / 350 Nm motor, with a 0-to-100 km/h of a leisurely 9.4 seconds. A more powerful 160 kW / 350 Nm RWD EV9 has a slightly less leisurely 0-to-100 km/h of 8.2 seconds.
The 283kW/600Nm AWD model does the same 0-to-100 dash in 6.0 seconds. Kia will offer power upgrades via the Kia Connect Store, increasing torque to 700 Nm, and the 0-to-100 km/h to 5.3 seconds. Why not just create a “GT” model in the first place?
