MG4 Electric on Sale Under $50,000

The MG4 was recently revealed at Australia’s FullyCharged Live.

MG has activated pre-sales of the 64kWh MG4 Essence at $47,990 (AUD) plus on-road costs.

MG4 has a 64kWh battery with 150kW of rear-wheel drive power. MG claims a 50:50 weight distribution, and a modest 435KM which is more than acceptable for a vehicle with a battery of this size.

MG4 is the brand’s first model to use a new Modular Scalable Platform (MSP), and is one to be used in all-electric MGs’ to be produced.

The MG4 Essence has MG’s “Pilot” advanced driver assistance system (ADAS), automatic LED headlights and tail lights, rear parking sensors, 18” alloy wheels, adaptive cruise control, automatic climate control and MG iSmart app connectivity, and a 10.25-inch infotainment system.

MG4’s EV platform, as with most EV’s built on ground-up electric vehicle platforms, is able to afford the occupants interior space. The 2,705mm wheelbase seems generous for a vehicle of this size, but it is the boot that seems to be more roomy, with battery technology  making the under-floor pack only 110mm thick.

MG4 will charge at up to 135kW, with a 60 minutes time to 80% on a 50kW DC rapid charger. While there are faster chargers available, 50kw appear to be the most ubiquitous of the fast-charge options.

MG Pilot includes (among other things):

  • Blind Spot Detection (BSD)
  • Lane Change Assist (LCA)
  • Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA).

The range offers a two-tone roof, twin aero rear spoiler, 360-degree camera, wireless phone charging and iSmart connectivity. The latter allows an app to interact with the MG4 remotely.

The MG4 has been available for pre-order since Tuesday, 11th April.

Electric vehicles, regardless of the claims of the doubters, offer economic and environmental efficiency. Australia is among the countries that have state based incentives for electric vehicles. Private buyers have various cashback-type offers, and business owners take advantage fringe benefits tax changes. In addition electric vehicles are substantially cheaper to own and maintain, with servicing limited by the fact that there are few oily bits to worry about.
