Once upon a time, Rolls-Royce’s were all coach built, with the body created by specialised craftsman. The businesses created gold Gigs, bespoke Barouches, and luxurious Landaus commissioned by robber barons, diplomats, kings and dictators. Some would say they’re all one in the same.

The Rolls-Royce La Rose Noire Droptail is one such commission, a one-off. The dark and brooding debuted at a private event close to Pebble Beach in California. It is one of the many objets d’art curated by its owners.

Rolls-Royce La Rose Noire Droptail takes inspiration from the Black Baccara rose, a French, velvet-like flower which is a favourite of the family matriarch.

The intense colour is a closely guarded secret, applied with a base coat, over which 5 layers of clear lacquer, toned with slightly differing reds to further deepen the effect.

LA ROSE NOIRE Took 2 years of Crafting

The interior is the epitome of the “Rolls-Royce” of Rolls Royces. Its parquetry takes 1,603 pieces of black wood veneer triangles, forming 1,070 perfectly symmetrical elements, and 533 red pieces representing the rose petals.

This detailing wraps from the rear shawl panel, through the doors, and onto the dash. The concentration of the single craftsman consisted of five one-hour sessions a day. The artisan has been with Rolls-Royce since his apprenticeship, and worked in silence in a sound-insulated space avoid distractions. Nine months of work went into the art installation.

La Rose Noire Droptail’s two seats have edges trimmed in dark red Mystery leather, and light red True Love leather, with a subtle copper shimmer.

The La Rose Noire Droptail dashboard has a one-off timepiece by Audemars Piguet, commissioned by the client. The 43mm Royal Oak Concept Split-Seconds Chronograph GMT Large Date is uses a self-winding Calibre 4407 movement, with a flyback chronograph and a split-seconds mechanism.

The timepiece can be either be mounted in dashboard, or attached to a strap and worn. A powered clasp glides out to present the timepiece when a button is pressd.

When removed, the space is covered by a titanium openworked blank head watch with a white-gold coin hand-sculpted by Audemars Piguet artisans. A leather pouch is stored in the door, along with the strap and the blank head watch while the timepiece is displayed in the fascia.

Champagne to Match

The owners commissioned a vintage of Champagne de Lossy. The Chateau has made very few vintages in its 160-year history.

The bespoke Rolls-Royce Champagne Chest has matching rose petal parquetry, matching the theme of the car

A button, opens the Champagne Chest to display hand-blown crystal champagne flutes. The exterior lid becomes a serving tray made of bookmatched open pore Black Sycamore wood with a design of the Chateau central to the brushed and laser-cut stainless-steel inlay.

The sides have more of the parquetry work, and open to reveal two hammocks for the special edition Champagne de Lossy. The thermal champagne coolers are made from black anodised aluminium and carbon fibre, in the same dark Mystery colour as the car.
