Polestar 2 owners have the opportunity to install the latest operating system upgrade including Android R for the Android Automotive OS infotainment system. These software changes include an enhanced app and like most EVs, functions that future-proof their cars. The Over-The-Air upgrades will roll out to owners incrementally from early April 2022.

The P2.0 software enhancements are downloaded and installed remotely, to accelerate the integration of new functionality, performance and personalisation. As the downloads come via the inbuilt SIM, you have to be within cell range and that’s a problem for some in high density towers. Whilst the updates are occurring, the Polestar 2 is immobile for up to an hour and a half.

10 such updates have brought 100 improvements, giving owners an OTA release every seven weeks.

Some of these improvements include:

  • drivetrain optimisations
  • schedule preferred charging times
  • Polestar Digital Key improvements
  • an eco climate mode to improve real world range
  • battery optimisation with preconditioning

Around 90% of Polestar 2 owners have installed all updates.

“Our approach to software technology in our cars is that it should not be any different from how the latest software is pushed out on smartphones and computers in everyday life,” says Polestar CEO, Thomas Ingenlath. “With OTA updates, our customers receive constant enhancements and can choose when to install the latest updates, without making a trip to a workshop. We’re very encouraged by the positive response as seen from the exponential growth in the number of OTA installations, and will continue to deliver ongoing enhancements.”

Not all updates are insignificant or unnoticeable. Polestar 2 Long range Dual motor model owners were able to purchase a increase in power, in selected markets in November 2021. The software upgrade allowed a sharper driving experience along with increased power and torque. The new power figures of 350 kW/680 Nm resulted in a 0-100 km/h of 4.4 seconds.

2022 Polestar started with the Journey Log app launched in February. The app allows journey logs to be exported, for those who need to claim travel expenses at work for example. The Journey Log app was rolled out in UK, US, Canada, Sweden and Australia via the Google Play Store. Other countries will soon find the app available as well.

Infotainment improvements have included: the Vivaldi browser, Video Player and A Better Routeplanner. Polestar will also continue to leverage on the joint collaborations with partners and developers using Android Automotive OS.
