Chevrolet has upgraded their Silverado 2500 Heavy Duty dual cab pickup truck.

STORY BY DAVID BROWN:

In Australia most utes are big but now there is a new group of Pickups from America, converted to right hand drive for our market, that are bigger than big.

Having a commanding presence is one thing but the question that needs to be asked is “What’s underneath?”: In other words, “How big is the donk?”.

In this case it is something from your wildest dreams

The engine is a a6.6 litre turbocharged V8 diesel engine with 350 kilowatts of power and a massive 1,322 Newton metres of torque. It has an on-demand four-wheel drive system, a two-speed transfer case, driving through a 10-speed automatic gearbox.

It is hard to image anything it could not pull off the line.

In fairness it is probably too big for the urban area: It might look like you are just showing off. You really need space to handle it. It is too tall for some urban shopping area car parks, and it would struggle to fit into a typical opening.

But it terms of the image of the American wild west, then it is ideal, especially when you mix with others who are likely to have a horse in a float behind.

And Chevrolet have worked hard to let you keep an eye on all that is happening.

You can option up to 14 camera angles. You only have to be manoeuvring into a space for the side of your vehicle and trailer to be prominently featured on your 13.4 inch infotainment screen.

You can get cameras to view the load you are carrying in the back or a picture of what’s coming up behind. There’s even a camera that shows your tow ball and trailer’s coupling so you can guide it into place for ensure a precise fit.

Your activities are so easily observed it’s like having mirrors on the walls and ceiling.

For all its size Chevrolet have decided not to give any of the models those toxic masculinity names that some other brands have adopted such at “Raptor”, “Wild Trak” or “Pro-4X Warrior”. Nor are there flashy GT strips. Its capabilities are obvious without having to overdress.

This might not be the car to lead the Mardi Gras, but the people you would like to know, will just look and nod.

But it doesn’t come cheap. The list price is $163,000 to which you have to add on-road costs.

And keeping one of these beauties, means meeting its expansive needs. It has a 136-litre fuel tank and at $2.00 a litre for diesel that make $272.00. If it hits $2.20 a litre then it is nearly $300.00.

Based on the figures we saw on the launch, this may give you a range of 800 kilometres, but based on figures from overseas when the vehicle was towing, it may be nearer 450kms.

In summary, the latest Chevrolet Silverado Heavy Duty has a commanding presence and the performance you would hope for, especially if you have the thing you most love in tow.
