In an electrifying development, Suzuki and Toyota are turbocharging their partnership with the announcement of a new all-electric SUV. Designed by Suzuki and set to roll off the production line in Gujarat, India, in 2025, this battery electric vehicle (BEV) promises to add serious power to the global EV landscape. Suzuki and Toyota, long-time collaborators with a shared automotive history, are officially hitting the EV road together, with Suzuki leading the design and Toyota stepping in as a global distributor.
This partnership goes way back. Both brands trace their roots to Enshu, in Shizuoka Prefecture, where they moved from loom-making to car manufacturing. Since 2016, when Suzuki’s Chairman Osamu Suzuki and Toyota’s President Akio Toyoda first started talking, the two companies have launched vehicles across Japan, India, Europe, and beyond. This latest move—a Suzuki-designed, India-built BEV—represents a landmark moment.
Previous Toyota collaborations include those with Subaru which produced the much-loved BRZ/GR 86, and the Subaru Solterra/Lexus RZ /Toyota bz4X. The latter is hardly the picture of success with compromised range, suspect exterior design, and unimaginative interiors which cost way above the odds. It is a product with little hope of success, frankly it is just wrong. The Suzuki/Toyota promises to be a better considered end product.

Suzuki’s President Toshihiro Suzuki couldn’t be prouder, saying, “Suzuki will supply our first BEV to Toyota globally. I am grateful that the collaboration between the two companies has further deepened in this way. While continuing to be competitors, we will deepen our collaborations toward solving social issues, including the realization of a carbon-neutral society through a multi-pathway approach.” This partnership has evolved from collaboration into a concerted effort for carbon neutrality, highlighting the duo’s commitment to a more sustainable automotive industry.
Michael Pachota, General Manager of Suzuki Australia, echoed these sentiments, calling the partnership “a fantastic moment for sustainable automotive innovation.” For drivers, Pachota added, “it is about delivering vehicles that are both environmentally conscious and incredibly engaging to drive. This partnership not only benefits the Suzuki brand on a global level but also underscores our commitment to a cleaner, brighter future.”
And what can drivers expect? This upcoming BEV SUV is set to deliver on Suzuki’s promise of sharp driving dynamics, generous cruising range, and a plush, roomy interior. Thanks to 4WD capabilities and a platform co-developed with Toyota and Daihatsu, the new model is expected to handle a range of terrains, bringing versatility and style to the electric SUV segment. With this latest model, Suzuki and Toyota are proving they’re ready to shape the future—one charged-up SUV at a time.
