Toyota has done it again, setting a jaw-dropping new annual sales record in 2024 and cementing its reputation as the golden child of the Australian car market. The brand sold an astonishing 241,296 vehicles, surpassing its previous record of 238,983 set way back in 2008. That’s Toyota’s 22nd year as the market leader—longer than most of Gen Z has been alive!

The big story? Hybrids are the new black. Nearly half of all Toyotas sold in 2024 featured hybrid-electric powertrains, with the RAV4 leading the charge. The RAV4 wasn’t just the best-selling Toyota; it was the best-selling SUV in the entire country for the fifth year running. And with 55,902 hybrid RAV4s sold, it’s officially Australia’s hybrid hero.

HiLux fans, don’t fret—Australia’s favourite ute still passed 50,000 sales for the fourth year in a row. But the RAV4’s growing dominance signals a shift in Aussie tastes, with hybrid SUVs becoming as quintessential as backyard barbies and Vegemite on toast.

Toyota’s total hybrid sales hit a jaw-dropping 118,081 in 2024, pushing the brand past 500,000 hybrid sales since the Prius made its Aussie debut in 2001. It seems hybrids are the way forward, with Toyota planning to make hybrid powertrains standard in all passenger cars and light-duty SUVs in 2025. It’s electric dreams with a dash of petrol pragmatism.

Beyond hybrids, Toyota dominated every major segment, from passenger cars (Corolla led the way with 24,027 sales) to SUVs and light commercials. Eight Toyota models topped their respective categories, proving the brand’s ability to cater to everyone from tradies to trendsetters.

Sean Hanley, Toyota Australia’s Vice President of Sales, Marketing, and Franchise Operations, hailed 2024 as an extraordinary year. “We dramatically reduced wait times and increased supply for our customers,” he said. Looking ahead to 2025, Hanley said “Our forward orders remain very strong across the Toyota range, particularly for hybrid variants”.

Other 2024 Toyota highlights are:

  • Selling more than 200,000 vehicles for the 13th year in a row.
  • Achieving number one in the passenger, SUV and light-commercial segments.
