MG5 from is the latest MG from the Chinese carmaker to hit Australian showrooms. What started as a trickle has turned to a flood. MG’s mother company, SAIC, is state-owned car maker big enough to have its own delivery ship.
MG describes MG5 as a “stylish new sports sedan, sculpted with flowing lines and class leading performance backed by a 7 year warranty for when only a sedan and peace of mind on the road will do.”
I recently chatted with MG, whose spokesman said, “we deliver new cars with new technology and a 7-year warranty, for the price of a used car.” This refreshingly candid view places the company in a place where buyers see MG not as the heritage British marque making affordable sports cars for the masses, but as a good entry level choice for all.
MG5’s fastback shark nose design gives the impression of movement to the entry level sports sedan, starting at $24,990 (AUD) driveaway, making MG5 Vibe one of the cheapest cars in Australia. The top of the range Essence is $28,990 driveaway. The MG5 Vibe has a 1.5L naturally aspirated 4-cylinder engine, and MG5 Essence steps up to a 1.5L turbocharged engine. Colours are: Dover White, Royal Yellow, Diamond Red, Misty Grey, Black Pearl, and Brixton Blue.
The Vibe promises 5.7 L/100k, while the Essence gets a decent 5.9 L/100k.

ABOVE: 2023 MG5, one of Australia’s cheapest cars
Only a look in the flesh will see whether the claims are substantiated. When MG says the MG5’s cabin is of “sports luxury” standard, hard to believe at that price. Among the driver technology available is Apple Carplay and Android Auto that everyone now expects as standard, wired or wireless. In this case, wireless isn’t specified so we can assume a usb cable is needed.
As other car brands have moved up market, the entry level has been left ripe for the picking at a time when many are stretched for funds. MG has sold 20,676 cars to the nd of May 2023, quite some way behind Toyota at 71,287, but that rather misses the point. MG is offering entry level buyers value that no Japanese or Korean brands can match. MG at number 7, now way outsells number 8 Tesla 18,559, Number 9 Subaru 17,582, and finally Isuzu Ute with 16,746 at number 10. This pushes VW off the top 10, joining Honda and other well known marques from their once lofty positions in the crowded Australian market.
While there is plenty of space for luxury, at a time of sky-rocketing rents, energy, and grocery prices, the bottom of the automotive sector has been completely taken over by well-priced Chinese models. Has the rest of the market completely misread the room?
