As MG steadily climbs the sales charts, the showroom fleet continues to grow with MG4 EV being the latest, but that is not the full story.

We recently tested the MG ZS EV Long Range. MG ZS EV comes in standard range Excite and Essence, with Essence being the only trim level in the long-range model. MG ZS EV Excite was the cheapest SUV EV in the country but with the arrival of MG4 Excite 51 for $38,990, MG’s CEO Peter Ciao has made the decision to discontinue MG ZS EV Excite.

MG4 EV has answered many of the questions we had about the ZS EV. The biggest complaint was the slow DC 50kw charging of the ZS EV and the power output of a modest 115kw (down from 130kw in the standard range ZS EV).

There are 3 MG4 battery/power/range options:

MG4 51kWh Excite, range 350km (WLTP) $38,990

MG4 64kWh Excite, range 450km (WLTP) $44,990

MG4 64kWh Essence, range 435km (WLTP) $47,990

MG4 77kWh Essence (Long Range), range 530km (WLTP) $55,990

Depending on the model, power output is 125kw (7.7-100), 150kw (7.0-100), or 180kw (6.5-100).  MG4 is built on the new MG modular platform which will allow vehicles of many sizes and shapes to be constructed easily, and more importantly, cheaply.

When we originally reported MG4 details, prices started in the mid-forties, but MG has since added an entry level MG4 51kWh Excite which is the cheapest EV in Australia.

ABOVE: 2023 MG4 EV and Model Detail

Design is minimalist inside and out with little surprises that eschew the “built to a price” feeling that comes with entry level motoring. The extensions over the back window for example, and a cabin with 2 digital screens leave me with one big question: How do they do it for the price?

MG Pilot is the name given to the collective safety and driver aid system. Although MG Pilot makes an appearance in all MG4 models, the bottom model misses out on Blind Spot Monitor, Rear Cross Traffic Alert, Door Opening Warning, Emergency Lane Keep Assist, and Lane Change Assist.

MG is testing a market ripe for the picking and as battery technology and pricing becomes more affordable, the landscape changes. MG has signalled a 64kWh AWD ‘X-Power’ performance model could be on the cards. That’s car-speak for, “yeah, we’re gonna do it.”

Established brands will be keeping a very close eye on the Chinese car maker because they ignore it at their peril. From a start a little over 4 years ago, MG is now number 7 in the Australian top 10 sellers.

All in all, the pretty MG4 makes the ZS EV look a little plain. How does it drive? We don’t know as yet, but at under 40k for an EV, it hardly matters. Gay buyers love a brand, but they love value even more.
