MG released pricing and specification for its high-performance all-wheel drive electric hatchback, the new MG4 EV XPOWER. From nothing only a few years ago, the relaunched MG positioned itself in the entry level segment where is has been steadily making a name for itself in the top 10, steady at number 7, just ahead of Tesla.

It seems quite unbelievable that the $59,990 SUV will be the brand’s most powerful production car so far, with a 0-100 of 3.8 seconds using the new launch control feature. 320kW/600Nm worth of power comes from front (150kW) and rear (170kW) electric motors. MG4 XPOWER’s brakes bring the 100-0km/h stopping distance down to 33.9metres, with ventilated 345mm discs on all four wheels, helped ably by new premium Bridgestone Turanza tyres.

The new AWD performance model is designated by not-so-subtle orange ‘XPOWER’ brake callipers, two-tone black roof, new 18’’ alloy wheels, polished trim accents, and the new Hunter Green colour option.

MG Motor Australia and New Zealand CEO Peter Ciao said EVs don’t necessarily have to be boring, and the new MG4 XPower is proof that performance can be affordable. “The MG4 XPOWER has supercar performance packed with features including launch control and a track mode inspired lap timer showing that a compact EV can be affordable, practical and spirited to drive. We expect it will appeal to customers looking for a true performance car with plenty of technology and space to match. The MG4 XPOWER EV also retains the generous safety equipment levels, as well as practical hatchback features, of the award-winning MG4 range.”

Interested buyers can register their interest for MG4 XPOWER from this week.

Performance and handling

MG4 XPOWER offers the performance cars usually costing much more. The straight-line oomph is added to upgrades that distribute power for fun cornering.

In a first for MG, an all-new Dynamic Cornering Control System has a locking electronic differential and Intelligent Motor Control. The system allows torque vectoring between all four wheels providing as much traction as possible over the widest driving condition range possible.

Suspension upgrades include recalibrated spring and damper tuning, stiffer anti-roll bars and sharper steering. This has increased suspension stiffness 25%, meaning the MG4 XPOWER should handle better than the current MG4 range.

The 64kWh battery charges at up to 140kW, or, a 26 minute 10% – 80% wait at a 150kW DC rapid charger. MG claims the MG4 XPOWER EV will bring zero-emissions performance motoring to more Australians, being more affordable, and a credible alternative to conventional petrol, diesel and hybrid vehicles.
