Nissan is opening its prototype production facility for laminated all-solid-state battery cells, and they should be available some time in 2028. This prototype facility, within the Nissan Research Centre in Kanagawa Prefecture, is aimed to further promote the development of all-solid-state-batteries.

With the recent stories of EV chargers being out of order, or queues of EVs waiting to use them, more efficient batteries are essential.

It has been Nissan’s vision, Ambition 2030, to bring more efficient energy storage to market, not only for EVs, but for use in other areas as well.

Nissan’s aim to launch an EV with all-solid-state batteries developed in-house by fiscal 2028 is important for several reasons:

1: establish a pilot production line at its Yokohama Plant in fiscal 2024

2: materials, design and manufacturing processes for prototype production on the line to be studied at the prototype production facility

ABOVE: Nissan’s all-solid-state Battery

Nissan hopes for the cost to be $75 per kWh for 2028 reducing to $65 per kWh in due course. The significance is that it then makes EVs and ICE vehicles the same cost level. It is worth noting that even under current charging costs, to get a full charge on a 78kWh battery is about $35, and that most of the cost of current EVs is the amount of storage onboard.

The advantages of All-solid-state batteries is that they have an energy density around double the  lithium-ion batteries currently used. There is significantly shorter charging time due to superior charge/discharge performance, and lower cost thanks to the opportunity of using less expensive materials. This then opens up a wide range of vehicle segments, including pickup trucks, making its EVs more competitive.

Kunio Nakaguro, executive vice president in charge of R&D, said: “Nissan has been a leader in electrification technology through a wide range of R&D activities, from molecular-level battery material research to the development of safe, high-performance EVs. Our initiatives even include city development using EVs as storage batteries.

“The knowledge gained from our experience supports the development of all-solid-state batteries and we’ve accumulated important elemental technologies. Going forward, our R&D and manufacturing divisions will continue to work together to utilize this prototype production facility and accelerate the practical application of all-solid-state batteries.”
