Each of the guest writers offered their choice of top car for 2022-23

Covid ran ruin through the veins of enjoyment, and lockdown killed our regular weekends away as surely as if it had been done with purpose. Conspiracy Chinese laboratory theories aside, we set off under a sparkling Sydney sun as the fag-end of autumn fights winter for top billing on the spin cycle.

Weekends are made for enjoying, and 9 of us set off in our new cars, hellbent on elevating the humble Friday night to levels that would shame Caligula himself.

Which cars did we choose? Here are our top 8 cars for weekends away, plus an extra one for me.

ABOVE: 2022 – 23 favourite gay cars

9: Travis  Gladiator is not a great car on the road, but off-road is king. Not only that, but driving, even around town, gives you a permanent boner.

8: Max: Kia EV6 in AWD form is the only car I’d consider. The GT looks fab, but I only got a ride in that. A weekend away on the EV6 proved it can do country stuff as easily as any other car.

7: Raffy: After breaking up with Nico I shouted myself a little confidence booster, a Genesis GV60. It has a ball on the centre console that is as cool as fuck.

6: David: An older gay man gets driven around, and I got a Hyundai IONIQ5 for the space in the rear. I like a lot of space in the rear. I also like things that are cheap to run, are quick, and are quiet. I hate fuss.

5 Luke: I’m a petrolhead through and through, and I have an old Mustang for cheap (actually, very expensive) thrills. For cheaper thrills, I’ll take the Abarth.

4: Alan: There you have it. Pound for pound, the EVs are starting to take over. For my money, I’d take a Nissan Z.

Cheers my dears, and have a very gay weekend.

3 Nico: My papa always said go with your heart, you only live once. I love the Mini EV for around town. For the rest of the time I have friends with more range. Mini costs a bomb, but then, so do I.

Casper: Audi A5 Convertible was this year’s favourite for me. A droptop every time. It is frugal and fun, and still gets looks.

1 Ethan: Toyota Landcruiser is not pretty, not all that nice on the road, and hard to park in town. I’m a country boy and live on a farm. A huge discount makes it worth the semi-rural lifestyle. Landcruiser is my favourite gay car.

You can club on weekends if you must.
