The Genesis GV60 did double duty as a gay daily driver, and as VIP transport to World Pride and the 45th  Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras. In the back seat were The Hon Michael Kirby AC CMG and Kate Wickett, the CEO of World Pride.

An electric car can do anything. (See the Top 10 Best Things about GV60 HERE)

Genesis GV 60 is a rare thing. It is fast, pretty, and an incredibly good handler. The Sydney’s weather is on shuffle, and presented us with thundering rain, vicious storms, and temperatures from a humid low-teen autumn arvo, to a sizzling Sahara on steroids. Yet, inside the ambience was that of a Tanquers and Tonic with a twist of lime.

The cabin stayed at balmy 21.5c, with seat heating and cooling complimenting the comforting massage afforded to those up front. Bang & Olufsen sound played appropriate homage to classic tunes from all eras, with the GV60 proving it was a force nature, far more than the sum of its parts.

Looks:

Hello sailor!

It is panty-wettingly gorgeous, with voluptuous curves and a killer headlight array. The quad lights are made up of 20 delicate cubes of crystal, and the shapely rump continues the quad theme with a gratuitously lavish flourish. The indicators are down below, so you might think them hard to see, but not a bit of it.

The side profile is a now-familiar mix of SUV and coupé. The sloping roof and short overhangs disguise the leggy 2,900mm wheelbase. That fulsome figure is only 100mm shy of the rambunctious Palisade.

EV packaging is far better than its aging ICE siblings, no matter the brand. I can hear the gnashing of luddite teeth as we speak.

The Cabin:

The interior drips with luxury, but not in an opulent Rolls-Royce kind of way.

It is more subtle and considered, like a curated shelf of precious treasures. There is luscious glacier white leather, that is quilted and pierced to within an inch of its life. Touches of metal give the space a feeling of mid-century modern club in downtown Copenhagen.

There is a huge glass roof with an arena-like 2-piece roller-shade.

Inevitably, and rather irritatingly, all EV’s are compared to Tesla. Tesla dared to be different, but its so-so quality, and OCD lack of controls, make it highly susceptible to failure. What do you do if the LCD screens fails? You replace it, or throw away that car. What a colossally stupid idea that is. The Gen Z office boy who decided that, needs a naughty step, and a refresher course in practicality.

The Model Y feels hopelessly inadequate next to the Genesis, and that is that. Now the Tesla fan-boys will be joining the luddites with a jolly good bit of hand-wringing and cloth-wrenching.

But I digress, the flat floor allows the centre console to swallow handbags whole.

The controls ae nicely, if conventionally, laid out. Conventional until it comes to the acrylic ball that sits rather unsubtly behind the infotainment wheel. It glows with the selectable colour of the owner’s chosen whim, and at the press of the START button on the dash, triumphantly rolls over to reveal the gear dial. It is a stroke of gorgeousness that is not only worth mentioning, but is worth mentioning again.

We’ve already talked about the front seats, but it would be churlish not to discuss their deployable footrests. They can lift the legs ever so slightly so as to recline the front occupants to a place of relaxation and quiet contemplation.

Picture this:  charging, as one does with en EV.

There are times when one may have to wait, as irritating as that is. Do as I did: recline the seat, pump out that footrest, and stream a movie. You can leave the climate control just so, to give yourself a Zen-like spa experience, complete with aforementioned massage. Yes ladies and gents, you can have a rub-n….. oh, never mind. We’re in civilised company now.

The drive:

There is nothing wrong with your Rubenesque- Zen-like-cocoon rocketing you to 100 in 4 seconds, even if a bit of wee comes out. The side bolsters tighten, hugging you in the vice-like grip of a pole dancer. I’ll leave you with the visual to move swiftly on.

Drives modes include a 10 second BOOST. Use it often, damn the consequences to the range.

The AWD system grabs onto the tarmac like a kid in a lolly shop. 360 killer wasps would normally be trying to punch you in the face, but no, Genesis has the entire experience under control. The is none of the ludicrous untidiness that the knuckle-dragging V8’s inflict on you. They roar like a psychopath at an axe-a-thon, all while thinking of ways to turn you into a schmear.

Even with all their bluster, the GV60 will leave them is its rarefied wake. If you insist on noise, a range of manufactured tracks can accompany your sprint, but honestly, don’t be such a knob.

Equally ludicrous are the Sounds of Nature. You can meditate to the sounds of a madly cackling fire, or a slightly demented forest. Just, why?

Handling on the smart suspension still lags ever so slightly behind the dinosaur-burning museum exhibits, but in every other way, is superior. I say that not to infuriate the luddites, that is just a fortunate happenstance.

“Rapide”, is my word du jour, but of equal weight is joie de vie of being able cruise in almost complete silence.

Then there is this: Even if you brimmed the GV60’s 77.4kWh battery with electrons farmed from long-dead ancient animal, it is still more efficient, cheaper, and produces less C02 the equivalent pig-iron-powered plodder.

By now, the luddite’s heads are either coming away, or spinning in a pool vomit like a scene from Carrie.

Alas, my work here is done.

Sadly, I was not present at Genesis’  sister company’s release of the EV6 GT, something KIA apologised profusely for. Is the Genesis GV60 Performance AWD going to give KIA’s EV6 GT a run for its money? You bet your demerit points it is.
