Volvo Cars is back doing what it does best—pushing the safety envelope. This time, it’s reinventing the seatbelt. Again. Enter the world-first multi-adaptive safety belt, set to debut in the upcoming fully electric Volvo EX60 in 2026. It’s not just smarter—it’s intuitive, responsive, and tailored to the unique shape, size, and seating position of every individual in the car.
How does it work? By drawing on real-time data from a network of interior and exterior sensors, the system instantly assesses each occupant’s height, weight, posture and more. Combine that with details of the crash—like direction and severity—and the car’s brain selects one of eleven load-limiting profiles (up from three in conventional belts). The result? A safety belt that reacts precisely to the moment. A small occupant in a low-speed bump gets a gentle hold; a larger one in a major impact gets extra restraint to reduce the risk of head trauma.
It’s a far cry from the one-size-fits-all belts of the past. Volvo’s clever system adapts force settings dynamically to protect everyone—not just crash test dummies in perfect posture. And it doesn’t stop there. Thanks to over-the-air software updates, the system can continuously improve, learning from Volvo’s growing database of real-world crash data. Your safety belt will literally get smarter the longer you own the car.

It’s all part of Volvo’s “Safety Ecosystem”, a holistic approach that sees the multi-adaptive belt working in harmony with the EX60’s airbags, occupant detection, and driver-assist tech. Think of it as a digital shield that envelops everyone on board.
This tech breakthrough comes from the legendary Volvo Cars Safety Centre, now celebrating 25 years of life-saving research. Their crash lab allows engineers to simulate almost any accident imaginable, going well beyond regulatory standards to make sure Volvo’s promises match real-world performance.
Let’s not forget: Volvo gave the world the original three-point seatbelt back in 1959. That invention is credited with saving over a million lives. With the EX60’s multi-adaptive belt, Volvo isn’t just resting on its safety laurels—it’s redefining what restraint looks like in the modern EV era.
