Ford Australia has finally started delivering eagerly-awaited F150 XLT and LARIAT, in both long and short wheelbase.

The F-150 trucks come from the US factories as left-hand drive models. The RMA Automotive facility in Mickleham, north of Melbourne, re-manufactures the factory left-hand drive trucks into right-hand drive in a process taking 22 manhours over 3 days.

The invited customers were able to meet Ford Australia’s Product Development engineers as well as RMA Automotive representatives to get their own personal in-depth tour of the facility. The complex process pumps out up to 20 F-150s each day, on an assembly line with 65 stations.

The buyers were also able to feel the F-150 for themselves on their own test drive. This process is similar that undertaken by RAM Trucks, privately imported, then converted for sale in Australia.

The Process:

F-150s are originally manufactured in Detroit in United States. Once the left-hand drive trucks land in Australia, they undergo an “uncompromising and detailed” re-manufacturing process at the facility. 500 new parts are needed during the conversion after which recalibration of key systems takes place in order to comply with Australian conditions. The steering, climate control, lighting systems, and instrument panel, are altered. Once that is complete, software upgrades are applied to complete the job.

The 21,000 sqm RMA Automotive facility is near Ford Australia’s new parts distribution centre, allowing engineers from Ford and RMA Automotive collaborate. The fact that they work so closely means the end F-150 product is “Built Ford Tough’. F-150 trucks have been around for 75 years, and Ford’s intention is the buyers would not even be aware that extensive modifications have been undertaken. While it is not the same as factory right-hand drive, it is near as we will ever get in a market that is relatively small.

Ford showrooms will have F-150 XLT and LARIAT short and long wheelbase models right beside Ford’s existing range, and F-150 can be serviced through Ford’s nationwide dealer network.

F-150 deliveries will increase during November. For more information CLICK HERE Ford F-150,
