Dishing doubters a double dose of doom, Ford will offer a plug-in hybrid Ranger 4×4 pick-up in early 2025. Ranger Plug-in Hybrid has full electric driving, but adds tradie essentials that just happen to suit campers as well. Forward thinkers will cheer, and the rest? Who knows, but it will be fun watching.

Ranger jostles for the love of the mid-sized pick-up buyer, tradie or not. So many pickups are sold, that we can assume that many owners buy Ranger for something other than its ability to trundle tools from job to job.

“The Ranger Plug-in Hybrid is a best-of-both-worlds solution for work, play, and family – offering customers zero-tailpipe emissions EV driving for short trips, or hybrid performance that delivers incredible on- and off-road performance,” said Andrew Birkic, President and CEO, Ford Australia and New Zealand.

“Ranger Plug-In Hybrid will bring all of the towing and payload capability our Australian customers expect of Ranger, and with Pro Power Onboard for the first time, Ranger owners will have power for both work and play.”

Rather cheekily, Ranger Plug-in Hybrid has more torque than the rest of the Ranger models. That will have a few heads spinning, something I’m looking forward to seeing. Its 2.3-litre Ford EcoBoost turbo petrol engine is mated to an electric motor and rechargeable battery. The 45 KM  EV-only mode is modest by some standards, but Ford claims more than half of Ranger owners drive under 40km a day.

Ranger Plug-In Hybrids can still tow 3,500 kg, just like all the other Rangers, but it is what else it can do that is its nifty party trick.

Ranger Plug-in Hybrid has “Pro Power Onboard”, just what every budding explorer needs. Traditional buyers, like our trusted tradies, can power their big tools and other “appliances” on a muddy, off-gird, worksite. However, our rugged, flanny-wearing explorers can run a remote campsite, and all the exposés they can muster. Hoorah! They can pop their plugs into on-board sockets in the cargo bed and inside the cabin. The upshot is that those nasty old generators can be kicked to the kerb. A revelation to ute drivers, but old news to those of us who fancy a sexy little battery powered hatch.

Ranger Plug-in Hybrid has EV drive modes that allow drivers determine exactly how the electricity is used. We’ve seen this in other PHEVs, but this is a first for the ute market.

Ranger Plug-In Hybrid is a proper four-wheel-drive, so comes with selectable drive modes, but it also has ADAS  features more common to sporty hatches and sedans.

“The Ranger Plug-in Hybrid will help our customers move into an electrified future, with the confidence and capability that only Ranger can provide. Ranger Plug-in Hybrid will join the Ford Australia line-up as our fifth electrified vehicle alongside Mach-E, E-Transit, E-Transit Custom and Puma BEV,” Birkic concluded.
