Subaru Finally Details the all-new 2022 WRX

Blair Read, General Manager Subaru Australia, said: “To say we’re incredibly excited about the all-new Subaru WRX global reveal is an understatement. We look forward to sharing more information about this highly-anticipated model with Subaru enthusiasts and Australian consumers in the coming months.”

The specification of this Subaru WRX is as per the USA requirements, so Australia might differ slightly. Local details will come closer to the Australian launch.

Buyers are able to register interest from today, 11th September 2021, at www.subaru.com.au and will be emailed with further information as it comes to hand.

After waiting for so long, the power and transmission details seem a little disappointing.

Here’s what we know, WRX has:

• Symmetrical AWD (All-Wheel drive)
• 4 door sedan (with a renamed Levorg wagon to follow)
• 4L Subaru TURBO BOXER engine
• 200kw/350Nm
• Built on Subaru Global Platform
• Subaru Performance Transmission with adaptive shift control
• Drive Mode Select system
• WRX in showrooms in Q2, 2022.

Subaru has “enhanced” the AWD system, which was already pretty good. It is the continued use of the CVT that will frustrate many. Subaru has renamed it “Subaru Performance Transmission”, which has been remapped. Although Subaru claims it provides a stimulating drive experience, it is still a CVT, and it will continue to disappoint.

The engine has gained a few KW and is now 200kw with 350Nm. This should provide a decent jumping off point for those wanting even more power in the STI model.

To add to the decision-making process, Eyesight, Subaru’s safety system, will only be fully implemented in the CVT equipped cars. AWD sport mode further enhances turning performance by controlling LSD torque.

Electric steering now has Dual-pinion power steering system. This should give a much better feel by having a separate axis for the motor assist and the driver’s input. Keep in mind, this will also provide another place for parts to wear out.

Drive Mode Select system will configure steering feel, damper settings, acceleration etc, just by pressing a button. That is nothing new. The damping force is variably controlled by monitoring the driver and the road and promises a smooth ride and better handling

Subaru claims the bold and aggressive styling expresses the enjoyment of driving that the performance car offers. However, ugly black panels glued to the side of the mud guards just look like a cheap 3rd party body kit. Thee funnel airflow, but surely it could look a little less cheap. Perhaps body coloured treatments would look less confronting.

The Cabin and Safety:

• The black interior has the obligatory red stitching you expect in a “hot hatch” style car.
• A large, HD LCD display integrates various functions, in a style more akin to new Outback.
• Jointly developed RECARO front seats can be had on some models

EyeSight driver assist technology has been upgraded:

As we’ve already said, EyeSight now has a wider viewing angle and is standard on all trims with Subaru Performance Transmission (aka CVT). The new electric brake improves braking, with pre-collision braking now including collision avoidance at intersection.

In addition, the stereo camera can follow the preceding vehicle even on sharper bends and is able to recognize a preceding vehicle coming into the same lane faster.

The boot makes a bold claim of being big enough for a stroller or golf bags, but has dimensions similar to the previous WRX.
