What at first seems like an unlikely question, comes into focus when price is mentioned. $226,806 for a base Range Rover compared to a shade over $98,000 for a 5-seat Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland. You can get the full silk cravat treatment at $126,000-ish for the Jeep Grand Cherokee Summit PHEV.

The 5-seater is shorter than the big mama 7-seat “L”, and looks better for it. Grand Cherokee Overland’s looks may or may not tickle your fancy, but no one can deny the big, impressive SUV has the distinguished air of a dinner-suited guest. It is all grown up, yet shows subtle hints of playful youth. Jeep fumbled about in its parts bin to find armfuls of delicious technology designed to take its passengers wherever they want in comfort.

It’s hard to pick a place to start, but as we headed to the Cottages, the 87L petrol tank was brimmed. A heavy foot does dreadful things to the fuel figures, something you don’t need to ponder when a light foot gives such a soothing, regal road trip.

The 4×4 system has programmes for far-flung fun, but it is the road performance where Grand Cherokee Overland makes you feel like a queen. Air suspension squats so sir doesn’t sprain his ego getting out. Height depends on what the big SUV is asked to do, most of it happening magically after selecting the terrain ahead. There is an AUTO mode that lets the programmes sort themselves out without the driver intervening.

We sampled Sport Mode, turning the muscular 2167kg chunk of glistening testosterone into a thoroughly naughty little boy. We scampered up a mountain pass like a capering goat despite having 4 beefy boys, their booze, and enough food for an army secreted within the generously proportioned portals. The cabin is generously endowed with all manner of techy goodness. The 4 outboard passengers have their own curated zone of climate control, and heated/cooled seats. To top off the palace-like ambience, the peeps in the rear pews can raise a discrete side blind for a full VIP experience. The 5-seater still has a ton of legroom, and rear seat backs can be tilted to just the right level of smugness.

It is those in the front who can feel thoroughly spoilt.

The dash feels a long way away, but close enough to effortlessly finger the controls. Wireless CarPlay streams music, and there is a Qi charger and a panel of assorted USBs. Although not the full bomshakala of the Summit Reserve, Overland’s sound system is deep and rich, delivering a lounge experience in the wilderness.

The sunroof is huge, and the is tasteful wood-effect trim to set off the acres of Nappa leather lavished about the interior with gay abandon.

Seating is suitably regal, but it would be quite devastating to see muddy boots ruining the uncontrived ambience. Gay buyers  may not have a family to cart around, but there’ll always be a gaggle of friends and their plentiful luggage to consider. Dogs will find a bountiful space to make themselves well and truly at home, but don’t let rover on the Nappa or you’ll face a hefty cleanup bill.

On Road, and off

The city experience is frisky, but a heavy hoof costs bucks at the bowser. There is no point complaining about the 210kw V6 being thirsty. Don’t buy a big heavy SUV if you want the economy of a Fiat 500. For buyers of an Eco bent , the 4xe Summit is a thrifty hybrid that will require that extra 30 grand you’ve stashed behind the sofa cushions.

Part of the week saw the Grand Cherokee employed as a box carrier during a move. The cabin can stow vast amounts when the rear seats are folded, and will still take 4 people and their gear in comfort, 5 at a pinch when deployed.

Air suspension raises slightly after the engine fires into life, giving the ride a gentle waft that my partner found unsettling. I on the other hand, revelled in the gentle bosom of a gently rocking member’s club on wheels. Active suspension changes ride feel with the change of drive mode.

Grand Cherokee drives as luxuriously on the highway as it does in town, but its raison d’etre is the ability to take the posh city experience off-road. It does that with the a panache of Elizabeth Taylor, and the grit of Jason Statham. Over the years, Grand Cherokee’s stance has gradually raised a bar, but unlike Toyota’s equally capable Land Cruiser, hasn’t sacrificed the interior design in the interests of ruggedness.

The off-road settings include a snazzy screen showing the surroundings, and another showing the suspension and driveline, making sure the camping party isn’t bogged in an inconvetnly sited patch of schmutz . It is quite mesmerising. The settings are simple to use, and watching the huge SUV clambering up an escarpment feels like it is doing something against the laws of gravity. The articulation looks and feels quite astounding, confirming Grand Cherokee’s place outback.

Grand Cherokee is a big American and it would have been remiss of us not to include wonderful footage of the russet magnificence of America’s Grand Canyon and its surrounds. When you think of going off the beaten track, no remote locale is out of reach.

The Overland is the second-top model, but the 4xe is worth stretching to if you fancy a hybrid. The 2.0L driveline has better economy and vastly more power.

Conclusion:

Grand Cherokee Overland is 100% Jeep, 100% American, and 100% capable. Jeep has put a lot of time and energy into properly resourcing after-sales. The Jeep Wave warranty comes with roadside assist, and the roadside assist extends to the lifetime of the vehicle if the owner services with Jeep dealers. That’s a clever way of giving the user peace of mind, yet ensuring ongoing patronage for dealers.

Is it always a good idea to service at the brand dealer? It is usually more expensive, but rigerous scheduled inspections keep the SUV in tip-top condition. If you’re heading off-piste, your vehicle has to be in first class shape.

It’s worth noting the 7-seater was recalled for rear suspension issues. Recalls are essential to remedy potential problems and it would be hard to find a brand that hasn’t recalled vehicles at least once.

Finally, Range Rover is our very favourite SUV, bar none. No one is pretending someone with the cash for a Range Rover would be a Grand Cherokee Overland buyer, but Grand Cherokee Overland is arguably better value, andequally capable. Most importantly, it costs less than half as many shekels as the cheapest Range Rover, and is ¼ of the price of Range Rover’s poshest model.

Let that sink in and read on.
