I reviewed the 2023 Nissan Pathfinder at its recent Australian launch, and to my surprise, loved it.

It simply should not work. It is American, and only comes in a petrol engine, thirsty round town surely.

What we liked:

In fact there is much more technology and luxury in All New Pathfinder than first meets the eye. This SUV is American designed and built. It is sold in very few markets outside the US, and is even rarer in righthand drive.

We worked out that there is a glorious 43” of sumptuous screen space including the centre and driver’s screens, head up display, and digital rearview mirror. We say sumptuous because it gives the place a feel of gent’s club crossed with posh cinema.

The surfaces have a lovely soft touch and feel quite high end. The leather nice and soft except the 3rd row which is synthetic. That’s of no never mind because only drunk mates will be allowed back up in there.

There are really clever storage bins for hand bags and makeup cases. There are nick-knack  shelves and wireless charging, wireless Carplay and android auto, with buxom Bose Sound. Everyone wants an outlet, and in true Oprah-style, you get a charger, and you get a charger, and you get a charger, you all get chargers! Up to 5 feckless friends can fettle phones with personal USBs plus 2x12v outlets can be called in to service heavier duty implements for a good night out.

In the top model, the rear console can be removed between the captain’s chairs. Those in the second row also score privacy glass and sun shades for a VIP experience. Captains chairs are heated, and there is another zone of climate control. There’ll be no melted make-up here thanks very much.

It is handsome too, with a squared-off look that has a Tonka Toy retro vibe.

Inside is comfy, even in the base models, with enough seating for even the grumpiest gay. A big fat sunroof will accommodate the biggest beehive, so what’s not to like?

Not So Much:

Although hideously dirty diesels have fallen from favour, bustier babes like Pathfinder really need the lusty torque of an oil-burner, at least as an option. I’ll bet most would still opt for the luxurious feeling of a silky V6 anyway, but burning bits of old dinosaur is so last century.

There are no plans for even partial electrification, even though the U.S.of A. is the capital of cash. Cash talks, and people want batteries, they’ve said so. Wouldn’t an electric Pathfinder be a hoot? Nah, no such luck.

While I’m having a bitch, what’s the go with the central screen? It is smaller than that in the little sister, X-Trail. Surely they could shove a big one in?

We had to reach deep, fumbling about in our inner gussets to find stuff we didn’t like. The front end isn’t as pretty as it might be, but it does look butch, so there’s that.

Conclusion:

Pathfinder isn’t exactly ravishing, but it has a presence that is strangely attractive. It is that tall stranger in the corner of the bar. It is powerful, gym-fit, and loaded to the gunnels with techy goodness. 5-star safety comes from driver and safety aids, and every roadtrip whim can be had. Even a little off the beaten track is not out of the question.

Until electric cars are the norm, and petrol is $7 a litre, this will do nicely.
