GayCarBoys Talk Jaguar Land Rover

We here at GayCarBoys love a jag, that’s no secret. We adore a Land Rover, and get worked up about Range Rover, but are they all they’re cracked up to be?

Classic Jaguars were delicious when new, and just as sought after now. An E-Type had admirers throwing panties at it, which had nothing to do with the rock stars driving it, much. The original Range Rover started the SUV craze. Some claim that honour goes to Jeep, but Jeep was hardly considered anything more than an old clunker, driven out bush, by people who like a longneck for breakfast. Range Rover brought it into the realms of bespectacled Eastern Suburb Soccer Moms.

As for Land Rover, it built the world, won wars, and carried the sick to emergency rooms. Many thought of it as a Jeep, but better.

That was then, now there isn’t a single Jaguar Land Rover model that isn’t full to the brim with tasty tech, with  interiors swathed in cow, and trimmed with aluminium. This bragging right comes at a price, but is the price worth it?

What the boys said:

Casper –

Even now, a Range Rover gets my loins girded well and truly. The body, crafted from aluminium, is a manly work of art. The cabin is a cross between a ball room, and a board room, brilliantly designed to hug the occupants in its warm embrace, while taking them anywhere their whims desire.

We’ve had them as family cars, which dad said was akin to robbed, then Rogered by a football team. It starts with a purchase price that would fund a P&C for a decade. They’re always in the shop, have the fuel economy of a Saturn V, and bits would fall off with alarming regularity. It made no difference because it was a Range Rover.

Dad’s ride of choice for 30 years, is Range Rover. Mum likes Jaguar, for all of the same reasons above. She recently changed to a BMW, and hasn’t stopped bitching about it since.

Newer models seem to have sorted the dodgy plastic, moody electrics, and dreadful drinking habits. The supercharged 6 and V8 engines are killer, and the latest infotainment system is brilliant. Sound is important to me, and the speakers are first class.

I remember as a kid, standing at the bus stop as a graceful XJ saloon wafted by. Since then, I’ve had a love affair with them, apart from the unlovable XJ40. Now I have the horn for an F-Type. Its gorgeous lines look achingly pretty, and even the 4-cylinder is nippy. The 6 cylinder is aggressive and angry, and the V8 is positively brutal.

Jaguar isn’t about just getting from A to B, instead, it is about the journey even if it is just to the shops. Its owner enjoys driving, and isn’t afraid to show off.

The finish is impeccable but there has been the odd reliability issue. It wouldn’t stop me from buying one, if I had the money.

We’ve had Land Rovers on the farm in the past, and there is still one or two propping up barns and other sundry outbuildings. The new defender is out, and we’ve taken one for a short test drive. It’s a family farm and mum does the buying and she liked Defender. She thought it was a big step up from the old model.

It must be said that one of the new cars do any of the really hard work until they’re a decade old. Sadly, a 200 grand car is too expensive to knock about.

I’ve always loved the look of the big Jag sedans. It says, “I’ve arrived and although I am dead posh, I am considerate.”

We have utes for the tough stuff, and for most other stuff we have Land Rovers. My tastes for a Sunday afternoon drive, is for something sporty.

When I think of JLR, I think of XJ. Since the 60’s it has been the go-to for the chairman of the board. Lords and ladies love them, and there is the heritage to consider. Jaguar was making limos when BMW and Audi only made tiny tin boxes. It was more elegant than a Mercedes of the same era, and for me, that continues to this day.

Mercedes may be technically brilliant, but it lacks soul. I love woodgrain, and the smell of posh leather. XJ, as old as the current model is, looks the business. The Jaguar website has no XJ listed, so I guess we will have t wait for the new model, if there ever is a new model.

It is the carriage of choice for royalty, when they aren’t riding in a Bentley or Rolls Royce, and that’s good enough for me. The last XJ I drove, was being cleaned and prepared for Prince Harry straight after I tested it. A real live prince sat where I sat! I might want an Australian Head of State, but that doesn’t mean I’m not dead chuffed at almost meeting a Dianna’s son! OK, back now, I stepped out for a moment!!

The smaller Jaguar sedans are redundant. I love the Jaguar SUVs, but if I’m going to have an SUV, I want the full Monty that comes with Range Rover.

If I could have anything I wanted, it would be an XJ, F-Type and Range Rover SVR. If I had to choose only one…
