Taycan owners in the USA are now able to now use Apple Maps EV Routing which now includes charging locations.

Apple and Porsche Digital Inc. got together so that US-based drivers can route-plan using Apple’s own maps when using Apple CarPlay. Previously, drivers had to switch from  CarPlay to plot their routed charging stops in the Porsche system.

Like many EVs, Taycan has an inbuilt Charging Planner that advises the route taking traffic conditions in to account. It then tells drivers to stop at charging locations, how long to stay, and what percentages the EV will be during the journey. Porsche received feedback from owners, who interact with their vehicles in a multitude of ways and that Apple Maps EV Routing offered more choice in configuring a journey. This is particularly interesting given that many car makers resisted the Apple CarPlay interface, insisting their own native systems were superior. While that may or may not have been the case, CarPlay is now ubiquitous so is familiar to most people with a newish car.

“We’ve listened to our customers, and they appreciate flexibility,” says Steffen Haug, Managing Director, Porsche Digital, Inc. “This integration with a product that they are already familiar with gives more options and confidence in how they use their Taycan, both in day-to-day activities and on longer road trips.”

Like many other systems, Apple Maps EV routing uses real-time vehicle data, including elevation changes along the route and other factors, then Apple Maps finds charging stations along the way, tells you how long to charge for, and what % you’ll charge to.

If you ignore the warnings and the charge gets too low, the system will find the nearest compatible charging station. Compatibility is the biggest issue, but whether or not the charger will be working, and available, is another tbin g altogether. As any EV owners knows, charging is currently the bane of their existence no matter where in the world you are.

Apple Maps EV routing is for US-based Taycan drivers who have the latest My Porsche app on their iPhone. Enabling the new feature is done with a couple of presses of the button in My Porsche App and Apple Maps.
