Mitsubishi’s Australian has switched on its Head Office bi-directional EV infrastructure facilitating Vehicle to Grid capability.

Using JET Charge, MMAL’s Adelaide Head Office now has two bi-directional Wallbox Quasar now online. They allow CHAdeMO-enabled EVs to send current to the network, as well as being able to charge the car’s battery. It turns the vehicle into a mobile power storage source.

MMAL CEO Shaun Westcott said: “We are immensely proud to be the first automotive brand in Australia with bi-directional charging capability.  It’s the next step in realising our vision to deploy Mitsubishi Plug-in Hybrid EV technology and become a more environmentally sustainable operation. Recent power outages are a timely reminder of this technology’s value.

With its bi-directional capability, Mitsubishi can use its PHEV vehicle fleet to supply energy to its Head Office – or the grid*.

Consider this for a moment, Outlander Plug-in Hybrid EV can act as a mobile generator that could power a home for around seven days.  MMAL considers the head office installation as a pilot study for the roll-out bi-directional charging in homes and businesses around Australia in future.

The importance of bi-directional charging can’t be overstated. In recent times, we’ve seen the importance of battery storage, able to take and retain energy produced from any source, be it renewable, or fossil fuels, or nuclear. It is able to smooth out the rough patches within the grid, and as an emergency source in times of disaster.

Taking a step further, a bi-directional charging vehicle in every garage and car park could be the solution to an emerging problem, our grid.
